Smalandsstovare Information
(aka. Smalands Hounds)
History
The Smalandsstovare hails from the great nation of Sweden and can trace its roots back to the 1500\'s. Although the Smalandsstovare was officially recognized by the Swedish Kennel Club in 1921, it is believed to be Sweden\'s oldest scent hound. During the Middle Ages, the Smalandsstovare was used primarily for hunting foxes and hares. Selective breeding for the Smalandsstovare did not begin until the 1800\'s, which is reflective in the late admission to the Swedish Kennel Club.
Appearance
Weight: 33 to 40 lbs. (15 to 18 kg.)
Height: 17 to 20 in. (43 to 51 cm.)
The black and tan markings of the Smalandsstovare are similar to the Rottweiler\'s markings. The Smalandsstovare is generally born with a short tail (it is not docked) and this trait is believed to have been created by an early breeder named Baron von Essen.
Temperament
Mostly used in the Smalands district of southern Sweden, the Smalandsstovare is generally viewed as a hunter\'s companion. Although the Smalandsstovare is an obedient dog and can make a wonderful companion, they do need a lot of exercise and do have a bit of a prey drive.
